In the beginning

Rawhiti Domain is one of the few areas in which the Monarch Butterflies spend the winter. The population of Monarch's, and our own native butterflies, and don't forget the bees, has dropped dramatically. The drop is thought to be, at least in part, due to the loss of food source for these pollinating insects.

Where has the food gone?

Daffodil for dinner?

In 2010/11 this area was affected by earthquakes resulting in the loss - completely gone, not coming back, kind of loss, of over six thousand residential homes. Many of these homes had gardens and these gardens were the food source for our bees and butterflies.

Why Rawhiti Domain?

Within the 64 hectares of Rawhiti, there is a 1.7 hectare woodland area. This area has long been designated on council plans to develop for a children's play area.

The Guardians of Rawhiti are a group of passionate residents who have taken on this project. With support from local authorities, a natural playground will be created on the natural contours of the land, with natural materials.

This playground will be surrounded by botanical gardens - all planted with the mindfulness of providing food for our bees, butterflies, bugs and fungi.

So, it is the task of The Guardians to protect and enhance with the natural playground and botanical garden, regenerating the food source of our bees, butterflies, bugs and fungi to ensure they are part of our community, in masses, for generations to come.

As the garden develops and grows, may our community also grow and heal.
